About Flickr - from the Web 2 report:
If a picture is worth a thousand words, then Flickr is a very powerful social networking site as it uses photos and videos to link people together.
People with social or cultural links, interest in the same hobbies or geography, or who employ similar photographic techniques, can network through Flickr groups. These can be public, by invitation only, or private. Each group has a shared photo and video pool, and a discussion board. Public sector organisations could use these groups for a number of purposes. They can encourage people to support the community and local services by posting pictures to:
- stimulate and aid tourism in the local area by getting residents with pictures of local scenes, historic buildings or important facilities
- support activities that will help the community, eg with pictures and videos of approaches to recycling
- control the street scene with records of graffiti
- build campaigns to raise awareness or change attitudes, eg with pictures of littering and its control, or residents using a park-and-ride facility.
